The problem in Sheffield, which the Leadmill has milked to high heaven, is that you'll get a lot of people supporting something 'Sheffield' like the Leadmill regardless of whether the venue is actually run well or not. The Hendo's types. The owner has never had it so good. Probably tripping over money at the moment from all the 'benefits' they've had there. The truth is that it has been a soulless venue for many years, using management companies to book their gigs.

There's zero commitment to Sheffield or up and coming bands. All about money.

I'm not for one second saying the alternative is better. It will probably be very similar, without the milked goodwill, but to have people who don't know or care if it's well run or not waving placards about is fairly laughable.

Well i wont be frequenting Hagglers again. They didnt even speak to Winston first. Appalling behaviour by them.

Really? You wouldn't afford the same courtesy to a racist or a homophobe, so why would you to a transphobe? Posie Parker is a horrible human being who doesn't mind being in bed with neo-nazis

Id give EVERYONE a right yo reply and defend themselves!

Pookie, I'm stuffed if I can understand why refusing to call a biological male a woman is transphobic. Trans people should be allowed to live openly as trans people, and shouldn't face discrimination in any area of life. But a trans woman isn't a woman: she's a trans woman. Now please can someone tell me: what on earth is wrong with being a trans woman? Surely one is allowed to disagree with her classification of herself without being called a Fascist. Oh well, there it is.

She’s called a fascist because she appears with and approves of fascists unfortunately.

Was the person banned because the rally was run by a fascist or because of the persons views about the trans issue? I’m confused.

I’m sorry you are confused

Spot on Ruth. Sadly us logical thinkers are getting drowned out ;-)

We're slowly getting there, Pookie. Far too slowly, I think: what I consider to be a social contagion has gone on long enough. I'm worried about the young people who have been mutilated and neutered along the way.

The Cass Report was a big step forward here.

For the future: let's view with suspicion all trends that come across the Atlantic with the Gulf Stream.

Do you know about Posie Parker’s links to the extreme far right?

Even if I agreed with her (biologically incorrect) views on sex and gender, I would never be seen sharing a platform with someone who has praised “Tommy Robinson” and appeared with an advocate for a white ethno state.

In my opinion excluding her supporters from Hagglers Corner was spot on and I will continue to support this excellent venue.

Graham is a real loss for the city, thank you for acknowledging his passing.

Such sad news about Graham Turnbull, he was one of the (many) leading lights of the Tree Campaign. Thankfully his, and their, legacy lives on in the trees themselves and is all around us. Thanks for posting the tribute. Rest in Power Graham.

Good on Hagglers Corner!

Describing posie parker as an anti-trans activist is not a neutral stance. She is a campaigner who creates space to let women speak….

Expand full comment

Complete rubbish, she's a vile woman who spreads hate against trans people and has praised far right talking heads. Thankfully Sheffield people see through her and the clown standing for her party in Heely lost her deposit.

Guilt by association!

Look, Dylan: even a stopped clock is right twice a day. It might well be that right-wing people, such as Jordan Peterson and Douglas Murray, are right about this particular issue, even if they're wrong about any number of other things.

Ah, the ‘hitler liked dogs’ argument

It is no such thing. It's regarding people as individuals, not as opinion blocs.

But sadly they are not. If you feel she is right please feel free to define a woman, this should be interesting. Note that if you say something stupid like adult human female I’m going to ask you to define female so please spare us.

Expand full comment

a woman is an adult human female. Born

with XX chromosomes and female sex and reproductive organs. Please Dont go off down the dsd route as an argument against this.

So define female then? Are only people with XX chromosomes female? Are any people without XX also female?

Expand full comment

No. Only women are female. See above

it may well be... but it isn't.

Yeah, I'll go with just being ignorant, I think

I have defined female… as being the same as woman. I don’t need to define it any more. Why do you need more definition than this?

Expand full comment

One last try then. If woman = female then please define female. The definition of female matters because you (and Posey Parker) are defining a woman as one.

Expand full comment

Ok I’ll assume you are indeed serious. I think therefore you perfectly represent the intellectual vacuum that Posie Parker operates within and this (along with her support for the extreme far right) is why I have no time for her.

Expand full comment

And there we have it. The epitome of a man not liking a woman speaking, when they dont agree with him. Suggesting i have an intellectual vacuum is quite insulting. I do not agree with everything kellie-jay says or stands for. my original point was that the tribune took a side when describing her rather than a neutral stance.

If you had been able to define a woman or a female in any objective way, rather than the circular “a woman is a female and a female is a woman” we could have had a sensible discussion. I’m genuinely baffled that you don’t see the problem with this.

Expand full comment

Im happy with my definitions thank you. Woman=female and has done for many years. Why are you so committed to breaking this definition down- what are hoping to achieve by expanding the meaning of female?

Expand full comment

I am replying… not arguing. I gave my definition. You are free to disregard it. My definition of a woman is very clear. I was born one. I am now an adult human female.

Given the ongoing success of the Sheaf and Porter Rivers Trust underground tours, and the three hidden rivers that surround the Leadmill venue I suggest the new name should be The Culvert, or possibly the Culvert Club.

Thanks again Tribune for such interesting and well researched journalism. I love learning about my newly adopted home, and the best way for me is to understand it is through its history, both recent and more distant.

I’m not personally interested in the Leadmill, although it’s clearly an important place in Sheffield’s character, but I was enchanted by the idea of a mini Brooklyn Bridge! It might have been quite a draw for any visitors from North America 😄.

Speaking of North America, as a fellow Canadian, I was sad to learn of the death of Graham Turnbull - and at such an early age 😢. I didn’t know him, but a posthumous hug to him for his courage, determination and foresight. (Sorry, that’s not meant to be as macabre as it sounds!)

It doesn't sound macabre at all, Susan - it's a perfectly acceptable metaphor!
