Great article! The backlash to the bus lane proposals on Ecclesall Road and Abbeydale Road, particularly from business owners, was depressing. It would be great to see Sharrowvale Road pedestrianised.

Excellent article but dreadful headline! Just the sort of divisive journalism that I was hoping not to see in the Tribune. Cars have an important place in our lives, they are not going away any time soon, I have one even though I ride a bike for most local journeys.

That headline will provoke exactly the kind of anti-cyclist hate response that we have been suffering from for decades. It's pouring petrol on the debate. I'm depressed by it but also quite angry at such thoughtless writing.

Some of the proposals are good, though the jury's out as to whether the plan for Nether Edge will achieve anything as the design is poor.

But our real concern is that after a while Little London Road will attract one or more predatory men who will loiter in wait for single women, knowing that they have nothing to fear from passing traffic. There only need to be a couple of incidents and women, especially those on foot, will avoid using the road altogether. Success!?

Thank you for this article. I often think transport policy remains focused only on "clean air", which is important, and not enough on active travel and safe travel. Whilst e-cars can help with clean air they will do nothing to promote active and safe travel. The longer we can all remain fully safely active the longer and healthier our lives will be. Also, the personal costs of active travel remain the lowest too.

So many problems to overcome but nice to think we could transition eventually. It would benefit a lot of people's health, society in general and the environment if folks could reduce their dependence on the automobile. A third of journeys less than 500m is a lot of low hanging fruit. Building some decent cycle/walking routes a step in the right direction. Perhaps some pleasant buses would be nice, more frequent but smaller buses perhaps? Why are the stops so close together, this makes journeys much longer than they are by car? The weather and hills are also a sticking point for active travel. Despite the insufferable traffic congestion, car is still quicker for most journeys, people are inherently lazy and will do what is easiest if they can unfortunately. Only the bright and committed will chose active travel over what is easiest.

No mention of public transport. If we had a bus service that was reliable, clean and cheap, many of us would be happy not to use our cars for urban journeys.
