Living in Woodhouse and being a user of the 52 bus, I pass the Carlton pub on a regular basis on my way to and from town. I've often wondered how it keeps going when so many others have closed down - and, obviously wrongly, thought it would be a seedy, run down place where dodgy goings on mingled with equally dodgy customers. So thank you for putting me right - and thank you to the landlord for being so proud of your heritage: too much of Sheffield's past has been lost and it's good to know you are preserving a little corner of it. The next time the 52 whisks me past the Carlton I won't be so judgemental!

We lived in Darnall 1979-1997. Our wedding reception was upstairs at The Queens Head on the corner of Attercliffe Road and Shirland Lane - a fine Irish pub back then. Our first 'local' was The Station Hotel on Attercliffe Road - very similar to The Carlton. Back then it was ran by Mick O'Sullivan and his wife, who subsequently moved to the excellent Red House on Solly Street near the town centre. Old Attercliffe residents would come in on Friday And Saturday evenings and often someone played the piano and we had a good sing-song. Sadly, it went rapidly down hill after Mick left.

Once the kids were older, in the 1990s, we went to the absolutely superb Cocked Hat on Worksop Road, ran by the wonderful Alec and Ethel, and then by their son Tony after they retired. We had to pass seven pubs on the 15 minute walk down Darnall Road. There were also lots of good pubs in Darnall such as The Meadow on Main Road and The Halfway.

All gone now.......

I really enjoyed this article and will definitely visit the Carlton pub. Interestingly , I drive through Attercliffe regularly visiting several care homes for work. Some of the large care home chains have built care homes in Attercliffe, presumably as land is cheaper on these ex-industrial sites. Attercliffe is a fascinating area but not much greenery around if you have to live in one of these care homes. Maybe they should get some of the residents on a trip to the Carlton!!

Interesting read. Times have changed with alcohol easier to buy now in supermarkets, wine stores etc. Its called progress. Maybe Tim Martin will have his eye on some of these empty pubs. 🤔 It would be a shame to demolish them, especially the ones that have character.

Just one thing about the article, l am Sheffield born and bred and have never heard anyone speak with a t' in front of their words.

Nice piece - poetic in parts.Aunt Delina and Uncle Tom used to keep the Meadow St Hotel not the Britannia- some well chosen images and Dani has wetted my appetite for a return visit to the Carlton.

Unfortunately because of the inertia at SCC this kind of article still manages to find its way into the public domain

ATTERCLIFFE centre is still absolutely awful but there is so much going on around the place now . The reason there is only one pub like this left is because things are improving Pubs like this full of hard drinking “steel men “ are dinosaurs of the past

The new ATTERCLIFFE way is 400 metres down the road at the SOLP and the East End Gateway is being transformed

There are a few more survivors of which the Wentworth on Milford St is probably the best works gate pub left. Theres also the Crown on Brightside Lane which survives improbably. Quite a few East End pubs continue as semi-public gay bars (out of sight out of mind back in the 80s) which is sometimes suggested as a reason for the absence of a 'gay quarter' in the city centre. At least three pubs are now mosques.

I was born in pittsmoor ( Carwood road )

In 1957 I started work aged 15 at Brown Bayleys as an apprentice furnace bricklayer when became of age to go into a public house I headed for the Station Hotel for a pint of Stones to that the night I went in was the night Dougie had his road ( Dougie's road show ) where people would get up and do turn, the best turn of the night would get a couple of pints.

Please comment if you ever went to Dougie's Road Show.

When I was a kid we lived on James Street in Darnall - opposite the Kings Head which was on the corner of Poole Road. Dad worked at Davy's. On Sunday's we'd go to the 'Middle' on City Road. When I was older I used to go to scooter do's at the Woodburn and Staniforth Arms and the Attic Mod Club at the Greyhound in Attercliffe. My Grandma and Grandad lived in Queen Mary Close and I'd go up to the Elm Tree with my Dad and Grandad. Everything is gone now. The Pubs, the Manor, Prince Edwards - my old school. I don't live in Sheffield anymore but when I go I barely recognise it.
