Ah my apologies Victoria. A good piece indeed and the story continues.

My brother left that Church in the early days, he told me they got him to confess stuff then controlled him with it. He also left the 9 o'clock Service recognising something wasn't right. He was v. vulnerable at that time, he was a brilliant musician & played in the Services. Hv seen many vulnerable people be exploited emotionally in Churches, makes me hate Organised Religion all the more!

Really sorry to hear that, I hope he's doing a lot better now! I think the nature of religious groups can attract people with bad intentions but obviously many of them are far more wholesome than this

Great piece about Hope Church Victoria, I interviewed Dave Gilpin a few times when Louise Davies was one of the leaders (she was and still is, a brilliant communicator) I was always puzzled about their HQ close to the Bernard Road incinerator and you couldn’t miss Dave’s artwork all over the place which I was told was an earner for the church (Obviously I didn’t know he charged the church itself for his artwork) Hope church does a lot of good in Sheffield and I’m pleased to see it survive and prosper post the Gilpin era. That brand of US style charismatic, evangelistic zealotry doesn’t sit well in the UK. Good luck to Colin and everyone in charge now.

Thanks Andy (this is actually one of my pieces but I forgot to stick my byline on so your mistake is understandable). I'm kind of jealous you got to meet him as I'm fascinated by people like this, I reached out to him for an interview but sadly he didn't bite

Tithing is reasonable and respectable, and anchored in long tradition. Beyond that, calling for further monies constitutes manipulation, especially if it promises spiritual advantage. Martin Luther had, I have understood, got this sorted out centuries ago.
