I worked on Parkhill from 1960 till 1980 and saw the "progress" made ...for the first 7 years the camers and press came to laud the place ..then nothing and then it they came back to say how it was a failure.. The councli killed it as a comunity with redirection of footfall and social engineering ..looks ok now though

I'm pretty sure that's Ch Insp Gerry Clarke from West Bar Division in the photograph. I was a probationer and worked the Parkhill beat quite a bit. The up side was working from the police section station they incorporated into the flats, quite a change from the earwig infested police boxes, the downside was working the other half of the beat all the way down Blast Lane and Furnival St, with the gasworks, steelworks and the very smelly River Don. Parkhill people were, by and large, very happy to be there bit it wasn't long before the pub became the scene of Saturday night scraps. I think the biggest problem, though, was people blocking the Garchey waste disposal system. Did it ever work properly?
