Did you know that the higher peaks of the Peak District have been named Ethels.

There is an App (when isn't the? ) that details them and asked you to record when you have 'bagged' one.

So far I've claimed 3!

What a delightful and refreshing piece of journalism. I have never heard of this lady before despite being born and bred in Sheffield, she must have been a force to be reckoned with.

They were both still very much around and active when I joined the Morning Telegraph in 1967 and the paper took an active interest in their causes and the protection of the Peak Park, mostly led by the excellent Tim Brown. They were disappointed that the National Trust took the Longshaw estate but decided the house was surplus to requirements and sold it as housing. Gerald's great bugbear was Hope Cement works and its chimney, and he believed he'd secured an agreement for its demolition in or just after 2000 hoping to press the button himself. Sadly he died first.
