Hidden in the heart of Ecclesall Woods, there is a gated community so exclusive it’s almost its own micronation. Think Freetown Christiania in Copenhagen — only without the weed-smoking punks or the steady stream of gawking tourists. Though this enclave within our city has existed for just a couple years shy of a century, there’s a reasonably good chance you’ve never heard of it. Unless you broke in or are one of a select few granted temporary access, you’ve almost certainly never stepped foot inside.
In all his years studying the community sequestered within its sealed borders, Pete Brown tells me he’s never seen anyone try to force their way in. No fence-jumpers or tunnellers — just a polite, respectful distance. Though they’re ultimately owned by Sheffield council, these 17 hectares aren’t for the likes of you or me. This is no man’s land. That’s why I was ecstatic earlier this month, when I received a special invitation for a brief diplomatic trip inside.
